About Gramaru
Most Japanese apps are good at one thing: kana drills, or JLPT prep, or slang decks, or a review algorithm. Gramaru is built to be the one app that does all four together, on a single spaced-repetition engine, so nothing you learn ever falls out of the system.
Why another Japanese app
The JLPT ladder makes progress measurable, but it teaches you to pass a test, not to talk to people. Textbooks stop at です/ます形 and leave you unable to follow how anyone speaks. Gamified apps keep you tapping every day but rarely add up to real fluency. Gramaru exists to close all three gaps at once: a real JLPT path, the everyday vocabulary the exam skips, and the casual/spoken Japanese textbooks leave out, all scheduled by the same review engine so you never have to manage three separate systems.
How it's built
Every card, whether it's a hiragana character, a JLPT grammar point, or a piece of slang, is scheduled by FSRS, a modern spaced-repetition model that predicts when you're about to forget something and reviews it right before that happens. You spend less time on what you already know and more on what's slipping, instead of grinding a fixed deck in a fixed order.
Where it's headed
The curriculum ships in the open: kana and the full JLPT ladder are live today, alongside the frequency and colloquial tracks. The N1 grammar syllabus is complete, its kanji and vocabulary keep growing, and listening/reading practice is still ahead. The curriculum page always reflects exactly what's built, not a roadmap promise.
